It鈥檚 Not About Winning by Robert Montgomery
In October of this year, a heartfelt poem by Robert Montgomery, which celebrates the contributions of seven inspiring individuals in the world of sports, was unveiled at four iconic sporting venues across the UK. The project was commissioned to mark The National Lottery’s 30th anniversary.
Penned by acclaimed Scottish contemporary artist and poet Robert Montgomery, the piece, titled It’s Not About Winning, commemorates three decades of The National Lottery’s support for UK sports.
Each verse honours the unique journey and dedication of one of the seven featured individuals, highlighting their remarkable influence on grassroots and elite sports. These accomplishments were made possible with the support of National Lottery players, who contribute £30 million each week to various good causes.
The poem was showcased through creative installations, appearing in the dressing rooms at Wembley Stadium, outside the Principality Stadium, floating in the pool at the University of Stirling, and on the boxing ring canvas at the Ulster Boxing High Performance Centre in Ulster University Sports Village, home to The Sport Northern Ireland Institute. Broadcaster Clare Balding presented the poem in a dramatic reading during its launch.
